A conversation with intellectual hero N. Katherine Hayles about her new book 'Bacteria to AI,' machine cognition, ecological relationality, posthumanism, chatbots, AI aesthetics & poetry, & more.
Terrific interview. Interesting to see her coin the term "integrated cognitive framework" ICF. As you say, it has a ring like IIT. I like that she didn't want to propose a theory of conciousness. There are way too many already! Re "intelligence": my latest Substack asks what do we mean by this term, esp re AI and AGI. It has some overlaps w what Kates ideas - i begin with the question "Is water intelligent?"
